It happens sometimes that although I feel I have the time and energy to work on something new, I just can't sketch a design that I'm pleased with.
The more I insist, the more it becomes obvious that it's just not happening, and in this particular case I'm referring to - I had the inspiration to take a deep breath and look at the previous pages in my sketch book.
It is so important to spend some time sketching when I feel inspired - my designs "for rainy days" came in handy as that day it was pouring:))

So yes, I found this little sketch of a swirly fabric necklace - just a few centimeters on paper. After trying to reproduce it on an A4 paper sheet and failing to get the exact shape which I liked so much in the first place- it struck me! - I need to make a grid!

After that everything went smooth, I increased proportionally each little rectangle and I was able to move to the next step.
This method is used in pattern making for clothes - not one of my favorites, I prefer working with more measurements when it comes to that. But that implies 3D fit, while for bi-dimensional shapes that don't need to go any further, I think it's perfect! Have you ever had to scale up a design? What was it and how did you go about it?

I REALLY like this...I think it's the colors and the glamour that you added. I didn't know you sketched your designs first. I do the same thing!
ReplyDeleteI have a sketch book of designs too. It goes everywhere with me.
ReplyDeleteI don't do a lot of enlarging but I'll keep the technique in mind when I have to again.
WOW, I love seeing how other artists create :) thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love to see the design process in action. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting to see how others get to their final design. This new necklace is fabulous!
ReplyDeleteSo fascinating!
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had to deal with the challenges of scaling up a design - but I will tell you scaling up recipes can be a challenge. Even the smallest change can play havoc with your end result!
ReplyDeleteI do most of my designs by trial and error. A new design that's coming this month, I did sketch out.
ReplyDeleteVery unique creation!
ReplyDeleteYou're so creative! Thank you for giving us a peak into your process!
ReplyDeleteUnique Cozy Treasures-Very smart of you.
ReplyDeleteI like how creative people think in a similar manner. I suppose we all learn from our experience and in time we adopt the method that suits us best. I also have a sketchbook filled with technical drawings of my designs. I like to browse through it from time to time, especially when I'm up to sewing a new interesting garment.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, besides working with patterns, I haven't had experience with graphical designs or illustrations, but I find your method perfect. Also, I like the engineering approach to the problem (I'm a math enthusiast, so I lean to technical solutions of the problem).
Wow, what a truly inspiring creation! I love how you designed it and kept persisting at doing what you love. Kudos to you! Here's wishing you a very Happy New Year filled with joy, happiness and love doing all the things that you love and more! x
ReplyDeleteI love your new fabric necklace! And you did a fantastic job scaling it up. I never did scaling but must learn how to for the projects I plan ahead in the future.
ReplyDeleteYour necklace is so inspiring! Love the design, it looks like colored clouds, so wonderful! You are soooo creative!
ReplyDeleteI am in awe....this is so gorgeous!
