It happens sometimes that although I feel I have the time and energy to work on something new, I just can't sketch a design that I'm pleased with.
The more I insist, the more it becomes obvious that it's just not happening, and in this particular case I'm referring to - I had the inspiration to take a deep breath and look at the previous pages in my sketch book.
It is so important to spend some time sketching when I feel inspired - my designs "for rainy days" came in handy as that day it was pouring:))

So yes, I found this little sketch of a swirly fabric necklace - just a few centimeters on paper. After trying to reproduce it on an A4 paper sheet and failing to get the exact shape which I liked so much in the first place- it struck me! - I need to make a grid!

After that everything went smooth, I increased proportionally each little rectangle and I was able to move to the next step.
This method is used in pattern making for clothes - not one of my favorites, I prefer working with more measurements when it comes to that. But that implies 3D fit, while for bi-dimensional shapes that don't need to go any further, I think it's perfect! Have you ever had to scale up a design? What was it and how did you go about it?
I REALLY like this...I think it's the colors and the glamour that you added. I didn't know you sketched your designs first. I do the same thing!

ReplyDeleteI don't do a lot of enlarging but I'll keep the technique in mind when I have to again.

ReplyDeleteWe haven't had to deal with the challenges of scaling up a design - but I will tell you scaling up recipes can be a challenge. Even the smallest change can play havoc with your end result!

ReplyDeleteI like how creative people think in a similar manner. I suppose we all learn from our experience and in time we adopt the method that suits us best. I also have a sketchbook filled with technical drawings of my designs. I like to browse through it from time to time, especially when I'm up to sewing a new interesting garment.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, besides working with patterns, I haven't had experience with graphical designs or illustrations, but I find your method perfect. Also, I like the engineering approach to the problem (I'm a math enthusiast, so I lean to technical solutions of the problem).
