First Time Cowl Pants

Alright, time to prove I learn new things! And I can get so excited!!


When I first saw this kind of pants on Lakshmi's blog I instantly realized their awesomeness so...here we are!:))


Super good news: She wrote a tutorial about how to make these, so go on, make a fab pair for yourself! It's not complicated and her instructions are all you need, I swear! Err ... and the usual: fabric, a sewing machine, elastic for waist ...

I bought 3m of this lovely fabric...



...but ending up having enough for a scarf too which bring us to another good news:) : I'll write a simple tute for this simple scarf this week!

Other details:
  • I added a stitch on the sides of the waist piece, along the side seam, using matching thread on top and elastic thread for the bobbin. 
  • I inserted 1 inch wide elastic for the waist band. 
  • The leg opening doesn't have bias strip - I just overlocked, folded and stitched. 
  • To get the top of the leg piece match the width of the waist piece I had to partially juxtapose the 5 knife pleats
  • If your hips are around 36 inches or less, 2 1/2 m will be enough for the pants (44 inches in width).

I already wore these pants once for shopping and it felt so good! I think I want to make a few more pairs! And to take pics of them of course!:))

    wow! Magda, it looks so nice on you. all of us lucky girls who have slender waists can flaunt them as long as we have them? isn't it! Thanks for mentioning about the tutorial and also about sew-along!

    yeah! 2 1/4 - 2.5 metres is fine! the more the width of fabric, the more the pleats and more the drape! these pants are so addictive aren't they!

    do you mind if i share a pic of yours on Adithis Amma Sews (along with link back to your blog ofcourse!) just to motivate more readers into making these pants!) BTW where is my prize for making the right guess on the preview post ;)

    and yes exuberence head gear is a masterstroke!

    I was wondering what 'Cowl Pants' would look like when you mentioned them in the team thread ... they are so rich and opulent looking! And that fabric is just perfect.

    Hi, I made the pant but the fall is not going in the 'U" shape what could be the cause and the pleats are in the same way as in your pant. Can you clarify me.

      Is the type of fabric you used one that would fall like that?
      Check the pleats - did you take the same amount of fabric for each pleat that goes into a pair that forms the "U"? You can try to undo the stitches and make sure the pleats are equal in each pair- hand bast and try them on. Good luck!

    Hi i saw ur cowl pant pattern and wanted to sew for my baby for upcoming diwali festival. my baby is 3 months old. can u tell me how much fabric is required for him. i hve the draft of this, and i tried it. but i m not getting the drapes/pleates while stiching. plz help me.

      For pleats pls see the reply above. It's possible that for such tiny pants you can't use enough fabric to make the pleats "fall". Anyways, just to know you tried everything you can make the pleats as wide as possible, juxtapose them a bit, I have done that for mine as well. If nothing works, maybe another pattern would be a better choice for your 3 months old.

Time Travel Dress!

Yes, this is what Mr. Snaxo was trying to show you! It's a dress that took me lots of time to start, then some time to make, then lots of time passed till I took pictures! All abt Time Time Time! What's a dress for? To go here and there, therefore travel ... (But I'm pretty sure I didn't think this much when I just named it Time Travel Dress ... ) Other arguments I bring in favour of the name (these also just popped out): the print takes you back to childhood - it's full of of cute scribbles, all on a dotty background like in vintage comic strips! it's tight around the neck so that no matter how you land on the other side of the time portal you won't spill out of your dress!  It's also elegant because it seems to agree with this one of a kind definition I read here : True elegance almost always has a waist and is ladylike, i.e. it’s feminine and you can get our of a car without blushing. : ) Also out of a time machine , I would add......
